People who don’t put in the work to regularly maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of a household may take for granted how much of an effort it actually takes. Kids who eventually grow up and move out when they go to college or have families of their own may experience a rude awakening when they realize how much work is involved in keeping a household clean, efficient, and running with the least amount of chaos.

If you fall under the category of those who have always helped your family out with the daily chores and other responsibilities, then you may not be facing too big a surprise when you finally have a home of your own. But if you were oblivious to all the invisible systems that were in place as you were growing up, read on! Let’s make your transition a bit less daunting for you.

Here are some of the things to start considering as you start living independently:

  1. Hire the right movers.

First off, as you transfer all your things – furniture, appliances, clothes, musical instruments, etc. – make sure you get the movers who can do the job well for you! Find people you can trust to take care of the fragile items – the kind who can treat them as if those items are their own. There are a lot of moving services Calgary, Toronto, or any other city or state you may be living in.

  1. Plan accordingly.

Talk to your spouse, partner, roommate, even your children – whoever you are moving with as you transition into your new home. Many of their opinions, preferences, and insights as to your new systems may be valuable to you and to the effort of being as efficient as possible with tasks and responsibilities.

  1. Consider the aesthetics of the whole place.

Since you will be living in this space for a good amount of time, it is important that you see an aesthetically pleasing picture when you wake up in the morning – something beautiful enough that would make you want to come home to it as well. There are many ways to go about decorating your new house, so make sure you are efficient with this in terms of unity of the overall design, budget, and the preferences of the people you will be living with. Reach a compromise as to how you want it themed – let it be pleasing, but let each individual member of the household be happy with their own customizations as well.

  1. Talk about the need for a housemaid.

What are the routines of your family members and co-habitants? Will everyone have enough time to take their turns in doing the dishes, cleaning the common areas, not to mention the upkeep of their own personal spaces? If everyone is busy and the routine maintenance and cleanliness is a concern, it may be worthwhile to take on extra help in the form of a housemaid. Plot out how much time is feasible for everyone to contribute to the fulfillment of the daily chores, and weigh the benefits of just paying someone to do the regular work for you.

These are just a few of the many things you will have to consider in keeping your domestic life sustainable and harmonious. Do your best to reach a consensus with the people you are to live with, so that everyone can happily comply with the systems you intend to put in place.
