Office Toilet Etiquette – Rules to follow while using the Restroom

Office restrooms are going to be used by a multitude of people and, no matter how hard you try, you’re going to need to use them at some point. Using the restroom is a fact of life and the way n which we do it is one of the things that separates us from animals.

That means you need to think about your fellow workers who may need to use the same facilities and follow some simple rules. It may not make it a perfect experience for everyone, but it will make it a better one.

Business Responsibility

The first thing to note is that in order for proper toilet etiquette to be followed the business must ensure that all the necessary sanitary appliances, including sanitary disposal services, are available and maintained properly.

This ensures you have no excuse not to follow the office toilet etiquette.

Patience

No matter how much you need to go you can’t start banging on the door in an attempt to get someone to finish using the restroom. In fact, this approach is likely to have the opposite effect.

Equally, if you’re not sure whether there is someone in a cubicle or not, never peep under the doors, that’s just rude.

Cleanliness

This is one of the most important aspects. The toilet is there to be used and you need to make sure all of your business goes into the bowl. There is no reason for it to be anywhere else and men should always lift the seat to avoid sprinkling.

It’s a good idea for the business to supply wet wipes in the toilet, this will help you to clean up any unexpected mess you make. It’s important to leave the toilet not just how you found it, but how you would like to find it.

That mean’s flushing and always remembering to wash your hands.

Avoid Littering

Many office restrooms have paper towels for drying your hands. By all means, try to shoot the ball of paper across the room and into the bin. But, if you miss, pick it up and put it in the bin. There is no excuse for leaving rubbish on the floor or leaving mess around the sinks.

Be Quick

You can’t rush your use of the toilet but you can avoid taking cell phones and other items into the restroom, these will extend the length of your stay which is not a good idea if others are waiting to use it.

Aromas

One of the biggest issues is leaving an aroma after you’ve used the restroom. This is natural but you can take steps to reduce the impact. For example, leave the window open when using the toilet, or you can carry a small air freshener with you, this will only partially mask the aroma but it will help.

Keep It Dry

If you splash water around, especially while washing your hands, you’re going to make the floor slippery, potentially causing an accident for the next person in. When washing focus on minimizing the mess you make.

With a little thought, it is possible to keep the restroom tidy and presentable throughout the day, making it a pleasant experience for everyone.
