Other than being easy to afford, asphalt shingle roofs are also easy to install as they don’t require any specialized material for bonding and attaching (cement is just fine).
Asphalt shingles are also fire resistant, making them ideal for places where natural wildfires tend to break out, such as forests or green hillsides. Accessibility is not an issue either as they are available in most home & hardware stores around the country.
On the negative side, asphalt shingles have a very short life span and last for only 15 years. By contrast to other roof types, such as metal which last almost 50 years, this time period is very low.
Wood Roofs
Wooden roofs are visually appealing and give a natural look to your home. Additionally, they last for a longer period of time, with some roofs going on to last for more than 25 years, if properly maintained. Also, because of the lower weight than asphalt and metal, wood shingles do not apply as much pressure on the overall structure of the house, maintaining structural integrity.
Wooden shingles can be expensive though and because they are prone to different issues such as drying, warping, cracking, and fungal infestations, a significant amount has to be spent on maintenance. They may also be banned in your area because they are a fire hazard. There’s also the high price point to worry about.
Metal Roofs
The two biggest advantages of metal roofs are the long lifespan, which can last almost 60 years, and the invulnerability to the natural elements, including wildfires. As these are made using steel, aluminum, and copper, there are a lot of different styles and colors to choose from. All these qualities can also lead to higher resale value for your home.
The price point is a pretty big problem though, as these roofs can range in the price range of $20,000 to $50,000 depending on the style and material you choose. It’s also quite difficult to find a contractor skilled enough to fit in a metal roof as specialized materials need to be used and specific techniques have to be implemented.
